A couple weeks ago, we asked you guys if you had questions about the new Resexcellence. Many questions were asked, and I’ve tried to answer as many as I can. Hopefully these answers will provide a clearer idea of what we’re trying to accomplish.
Danny Cohen: Need any help?
Not for now, but we will definitely be needing full community support once the new site comes closer to completion. Stay tuned.
Digital Corpus: What features do you folks plan on laying out for us in the New ResExcellence?
The feature set is still a work in progress, but one thing you can definitely expect is a totally revamped archive system that is extremely easy to use and much more powerful than the previous archive. This means comments, ratings, user favorites, searching, and more.
Tim-Hannon: Will we still have access to all the old submitted extras? ie: Icons, bezels, menulette replacements, etc?
Yes. We are still debating the best route for setting up the old archive, but rest assured there will be some way to access all of Resexcellence’s original content.
Eskander: To submit stuff, will we need to get it approved like before through a moderator or will it be automatic, as in a script?
The submission process will involve moderation (as a basic screening process), but there will be a new, much more automated system in place that will result in much faster response times.
pimpzofspades: I would realy like to know when it will be done.
We do too, and we can’t give a solid date yet, but the site’s engine is well in progress by experienced Unsanity programmers Slava Karpenko and Jason Harris (you’ll be hearing from them soon), and a full design refresh is also underway by the excellent interaction designer Renn of Atacama Design.
Ben Perry: Need someone to help with PHP, MYSQL, HTML, CSS, or to just bounce ideas or concepts off? Or just an extra head to do some brainstorming? NDA’s fully respected as well.
For the moment, no. However, we will be asking for feedback on various decisions as they come up through the blog, so if you’d like to help influence where the site goes, be sure to keep checking back and leaving comments. (We are listening. 
)
Cruciarius: will the new resex require us to sign up for all new forums or will we continue to have our previous forum accounts, but maybe a new look to the forum? i’m hoping we keep our accounts. it would make it easier, on the users. though it also all depends on what forum software you’re going to be using.
We will be doing everything we can to transfer the existing forum user databases over to the new forums, but for the moment, we can’t make a guarantee.
Ian Smith: What happens to those of us who were chosen to be administrators for ResExcellence, during the sale to Phill? Will you be asking for any assistance from us anytime soon?
For the record, these administrators were chosen before the sale. However, the current plan is to start with you guys administrating under the conditions we have previously discussed.
Cameron McNab: I’m still not really sure how this is going to complement MacThemes… will it be a place to post things like DA and then we will link to them in the MTF posts?
We have plans for promoting synergy between the sites, and this will likely involve some heavy cross-linkage.
Jason: Are you going to have the same categories as on the old ResExcellence, e.g. Sony Ericcson themes and iTunes themes and the like? or are you going to have different ones.
We are reworking the categories, but you can expect most of the popular ones in the Resex archive making a comeback.
Olu: Please change the white text on black background. It’s a strain on the eyes.
To note, this blog design definitely does not reflect what the final site design will be. (And I think it’s safe to say that the final design will not be white text on black.) However, for now, we have upped the contrast to make this more readable.
Dog Cow: I hope we get some of the stuff back before the server crash back in ‘04 or whenever it was. Is that possible?
Unfortunately, no. That data has been lost, and we won’t be able to recover it. What we have is the data on the server when it went offline, nothing more, nothing less.
Dave: Take as much time as you need-not as long as the last guys, but don’t rush because of the impatience of some people. Glad to see ResEx back.
For all who have said similar things, thank you so much for supporting this endeavor. It’s been a wonderful feeling receiving your feedback.

You know what would be really cool…. an informal two or three time per week status update of what’s going on with the new site.
I don’t mean in a “when is it going to be done” kind of way, but more of a “today we finalized the final masthead, here’s a quick screenshot of ideas that did NOT make the cut” and “we’re also looking at some icons to use as site artwork” or “the rest of this week we’re coding this or that and it involves a lot of database work, blah, blah, blah”.
You know what I mean? Just to kind of make the community feel a bit of what is involved with the back end of a site such as this, as well as to give insight into the creative process. What technologies are being used. Maybe talk about if you’re using WordPress for the final site, if so what are the good and bad with using it. Are you using Flash, javascript, etc… those types of things. Nothing that would reveal the final site, but more of a “day in the life of” type of thing.
I dunno, just my thoughts.
i can’t believe someone compared resex to macthemes and dA. both of those sites are horrid, imo. macthemes = all about mac themes, duh. dA = all about art thieft and crap site load times. resex = everything about customizing and fixing the mac and has the friendliest community of any forum.
it would be cool if we could sign up for an e-mail to be sent out once the new site is up
(so i don’t have to keep checking & being disappointed)

i have another question, more about the back end than anything else
the old resex used to either host news about recent work or host art from people like myself, we would have to submit a sit file with a readme of the url, name of artist and any other info we saw fit
would it be possible to have thumbnails of our work for people to see while us still hosting the art if we want?
i put a lot of work into my back end of my site for statistics and whatnot and it defeats the purpose if people don’t go to my site
i mean sure it had the readme, but honestly, how many people read the readme? i barely ever did

With all of this talk from having bought it from Scott, what was his imput? How did he feel about this whole process, and everything to date? Will he be interested in the site? As for the site, please, please, please tell me that the forums will not be all glam and no backbone. Very few of us were around back in the days of the tanned background of the forums (i can’t even remember the version), but it ran smoothly, and none of us complained of a lack of GUI niceness. Honestly, rather then try and impress us with nice edges and blues and all that, can we just have a fully working, less glitchy, forums?

@Razor7: Believe me, ResEx will not go down the drain. I heard Phill’s interest in buying it after the fall of Chris and Brian and Scott, having chatted with him some, seemed pretty enthusiastic (to me). Phill gets shit done, good and quick. (Macheist? MyDreamApp? hehe)

I guess it’s time for me to speak my peace as I have kept my mouth shut long enough. As a former ResX editor, I think I’ve earned the right. From what I’ve read in recent months, it truly amazes me just how ballsy and demanding many ResX readers have become, and frankly I’m getting real sick of it. From the get go, ResX was set up to be a “free to the public” resource. We never asked for money, monthly subscriptions or any other fund raising schemes. Why do so many think they have the right to demand this or that in light of that? In the earlier days of the site, the advertising revenue from banner adds were enough to pay our meager salaries and keep the site hosted. Even in it’s hay-day it was a labor of love considering how many unpaid hours we all logged. Shortly after Scott Chittwood purchased the site from Michael Coyle, a major advertiser pulled the plug on the program, and revenues plummeted. Still, no request for support from the public. Scott gracefully did what he could to keep things floating, but the demands of the site, financial and otherwise obviously began to outweigh the benefits of keeping it going. Again, a whole lot of demanding and down right rude behavior followed the next “owners” right out the door. I can’t honestly figure out what they had in mind…. None the less, had I been treated that way, I probably would have bailed as well.
The heart of ResX has been it’s brilliant ability to encourage creativity. The benefit has been great to many and it hasn’t cost anyone a cent. Try and keep that fact in mind as the new operators grapple with a tremendous archive of collective work and bring the site into the future.

To Dissapointed: ResExcellence is the most important part of resex, not just the forums buddy….you shouldn’t worry. Seems like to me, the “new crew” has it totally together. As for the rest of you ppl’s, I’m 27, and I remember going to ResEx back in my senior year, so…..all I can say is, I think this is going to be the best thing to happen to ResExcellence since Coyle!!! Good luck fellows, keep up the good work.
Speak for yourself. Forums are all over the place – people came to ResEx for the content, not the discussion.

You guys that are complaining about things taking to long, and wanting the forums up immediately are ridiculous. Great things take time, and from what I’ve heard, and know, this is going to be a great thing.
Just sit back, relax, and be patient. And remember, there almost wasn’t a ResEx.
@ Jim: actually, at first, i did come to resex for the content, but now i only come for the discussion. i’ve been through all the content and got what i wanted and i see the new content, every time i hit my resex bookbark, on my way to the forums (back when everything was up and running, of course).
If there’s one thing people visiting here should realize by now from the experience of the previous owners, it’s that the new guys should spend the time to do this right. Get the design down, get the backend down, and BETA TEST it before it goes live to the public, so that all of you who are complaining don’t complain more when it does go live and you don’t like how something works. So chill out and let them do things at their own pace.
Or maybe they should just put the little ResEdit logo back up and close these comments down for now so they don’t have to read the complaints already coming in?

@ Razor7 – This group has the talent, drive and capacity to bring ResExcellence forward in a signifcant and proper fashion while at the same time understanding the wealth of site (and Mac) history they have taken stewardship of. I’m excited for the future of ResExcellence!
@ Dan Flax – Bravo my friend! The greatest thing in all my experience with ResExcellence (as a fan, contributor, editor/owner) was the site always being open to people with a wide range of talents, experience and interests. Watching those artists develop and grow was hugely rewarding to me, and I know to you too feel the same way.

Being rather new to computers,I have enjoyed looking at your free downloadable icons when they were up but I wish that, if possible, you could also have them in Windows XP along side of Mac.That way I could also enjoy them on my pc.
Your icons were/are so very beautiful that I know that they would really brighten up my desktop and other computer files that I have on the harddrive if they were in Windows XP format.
Don’t let others get you down EVER!!! Remember, they are the problem not you!!

okay, I will speak for myself. Of course there was all the content on the main site, but you can’t ask your computer how to change your theme, or “Computer, why are you crashing every time i change you icons?” So you ask a human. Forums are where humans live. So you go to the forums. And after a while, people stopped submitting stuff to the main site and just posted it to the forums… the life blood of resex.
And would it really hurt just to open up the forums?? Unless you have completely fucked them up all you have to do is reactivate them.

@ Dissapointed: i agree, the submissions did seem to stop, but you can’t blame the people posting in the forums. not all of us are icon, desktop picture, theme, etc artists. also, please don’t swear. resex has always been a family enviroment site, so that means all ages are welcome.

I’ve been to ResEx since early 2004 and I never even loked in the forums until just a few months ago whjen the new ones appeared.
ResEx doesn’t need forums, the discussion in on the front page. It’s always been about the content, the Downloads

I can’t wait to upload my updated “Doohickey” Mac OS 8-9 theme. (It’s completely finished now!) I also have some new info on how those themes work that I can post on the forum.
I had these things ready RIGHT AFTER ResEx went down. It will be nice to see what the place looks like when it opens back up!
Will there still be a REALbasic section? I found that really useful.

I used to come to ResExcellence every day, just like so many of the other posters. It was a place where I could find whatever I needed. I will be very glad to see it back online again.

Yeah, I’ve been working on preserving many of the older and popular ResEx downloads. I do what I can to help.
Since I’m not directly involved with ResEx, I can’t say what the new site and design is going to look like.

Back when I first discovered RexEx, I spent many happy hours editing System files and customizing my brand-spanking-new Performa. I gave up on the site months ago, but I’m glad I decided to check one last time. I had no idea this was going on.
I have one question. I’m glad to see that you’re beefing up the search capabilities for content and submissions. Do you have similar plans for the forums? Searching for posts on the old ResEx was futility itself. I’m pretty sure the engine was based on chaos mathematics.
But I hardly care. ResEx was a site I enjoyed and relied on. Thank you for saving it!

But I need ResEx to be up! I have a burning question, I can’t find it anywhere on the web, and I know you guys know how to answer it (I was **sorta** referred here by Iconfactory).
Ahhh screw it. I’ll ask it anyway: How can I access the resources in Microsoft Office programs such as Word so I can change my icon and my dock doesn’t look ugly? I seriously can’t find it ANYWHERE, so any help would be appreciated.

Word just needs a copy/paste edit in the “get info” window like most apps that don’t need to show status. You don’t need to get into the apps resources to change it. The mail app on the other hand is trickier…
@Tim  Office apps are old style resources, you’ll need to open them in Classic with ResEdit or one of the native OS X ResEdit clones to get at things like the splash screens. Otherwise like the Granz says, copy and paste for the icons is easy cake.
Things looked so bleak….my desktop was starting to look really shabby….I had so much extra time on my hands…I mean why finish those cute icons I was making?….ResEx was was dying, a slow bitter, ugly death…the MacPeople were turining on themselves…..Then I thought, “I will check just one last time, just to make sure ResEx had finally died, you know just faded away to that big YOU HAVE REACHED THIS PAGE IN ERROR cyberspace heaven.” Maybe I will get to peek in on one last view of the decomposing of a once really fun place I visited at least once every day or so…..But much to my surprise, it looks like RezEX had popped up once again! Just like a……(dare I say it?)……JACK IN THE BOX! Oh happy day! Keep going you guys. We are still out there waiting…and in your honor today, I am going to completely waste an hour or two working on those long ago started icons…….
**sigh** I feel really stupid. I’ve got my “Microsoft Word Info” window up and my icon all ready. However…I can’t find any way to copy and paste the .ico file into the Word info window.

It’s OK… The way to do it is to open a “Get Info” window on the icon and you will see a preview of it on the upper left corner. Click on it and then select “Copy” from the Edit menu. Now go to the open “Get Info” window for your Microsoft app and select the preview and then go to “Edit” in your menu bar and select “Paste” and you should see the new icon appear. By the way… you are using the “Get Info” from the “File” menu in the menu bar?

Always loved the site. It was thanks to your work Ryu that I had countless of hours of fun on my Mac. It would be great to see ResExcellence going again, even if it only this time displayed some of the really good artists in this community. Hopefully it will happen before my birthday on the 13th.

I’m sure though, that all of us here would love to even get quick updates.
