So it’s been a while since we posted to let you know what’s going on. This post is meant to detail what we see the site becoming as we move toward re-opening.
Our main goal is to provide a central repository service for all things related to mac graphical user interface. To do so, we’ll focus on providing some basic site services in the following categories:
News
Downloads
Forums
Articles
Profile
Submissions
Search
Obviously, each of these will have sub-sections and the big one is Downloads. Our main focus will be to provide a source for all of the main gui content that is popular today. Namely, icons, desktops, themes, cursors, sounds, and a few others. Each of these will be able to be rated, commented on, and the download numbers will be visible. We know that people who create this stuff thrive on feedback. So we hope to provide a great way for the end users to interact with the authors and for those authors to see and read what the users like in their creations.
One of the biggest questions we get is “will you host the old content?” and “There was this nifty thingamajig that I found on resex, I want it again!”. Well, the big news for fans of the old content is that we have decided to host it all with the full features of our new ratings and comment system. (we had considered just putting a giant torrent file or simply hosting it in a directory style fashion) So that means that not only will you be able to download whatever old goodies you want, but they won’t be second class citizens in the new resex, they’ll have all the same fun features as the current and new content.
Obviously one of our big challenges is organizing this content. There are A LOT of files that we need to sift through, edit, upload, categorize, etc. We also have the challenge of designing an interface that will get you to what you need in an elegant way. Lastly, we have the challenge of designing and coding a backend that will handle this task. The good news is, it’s all underway. The bad news? Well, it’s not finished and we are going to pull an Apple and say “it’ll be ready when it’s ready” rather than give you a release date.
We have Unsanity programmers Jason Harris and Slava Karpenko hard at work on the technical end of things. Many of you know them from their other projects. Those who don’t know them…. rest assured that these two have a great deal of experience in pulling off fantastic work on big web projects.
But, unlike our favorite fruit purveyor, we’ll keep you updated with the progress. We have gone through 3-4 design drafts and we should have something to show you in that area soon!

I like the dark one as well because the design and colors look fairly clean and get out of the way of the showcased artwork, but I’d also like to see what that one would look like with Classic-style French Blue accents (like the last mockup) in place of the orange.
I like the blue and black ones the best.

I’m glad to see new stuff to read, I was getting impatient. One comment I have though is that those logos really don’t look like ResExcellence. I thought it would be a very cool looking one but it definitely looks like something you get when you search Google. No offense guys, I’m not trying to put anyone down, I just would like to see something very professional.
Regarding the templates, I really like the first two, blue and black, but definitely you have to ditch the purple one. In my personal opinion, I think they need a lot more flavor (colors, images, etc.), they look more like generic templates.
Again guys, I’m not trying to put you or your work down, I’m just giving you a few suggestions to make this more tasteful.

I’m glad to see new stuff to read. The templates, I really like the first two, blue and black, but most the blue one, but thad dos’t matter for me, the stuff/downloads matters most and I think avryone would agree on that

Every update I see makes it more obvious that you guys are serious about treating ResEx right. Thanks for your effort and dedication. (Oh, and the dark style is nice… but my vote has to go with the modified oldschool logo!) Peace, y’all.

I like the blue mockup the best, with the dark one coming in a fairly distant second. The purple “old school” is just butt-ugly. The “old” ResEx is dead, lets just let it be buried already.
Very happy to see an update here! Also nice to hear that the previous content will be available – even though I know that means it will take more time.
progress report much appreciated. me likes the dark template best – and while I realize the banner you’re using now (with ResEx in the spotlight) was meant to be temporary, IMHO it makes more of an appropos statement than just the text. I liked the original logo but simply changing the Mac Model as you did in the purple version doesn’t particularly do it for me. I’d rather see you use the joker with a Classic Mac but with modern graphic styles to update the look but keeping it recognizable for branding.
I’m enjoying the progress reports just as much as everyone else and am anticipating the revivification of resEx as well.
But I’ve got this crazy idea, member when they redid the resEx logo… they asked the user base (which is a bunch of designers) to send in ideas and they had a voting contest. Well what if you did that now, put up a rough estimate template page of what you expect (raw html) and let your user base go to work using css… kinda like what the css zengarden did.
Seems like it would be a fun project… and you know all the users would jump on it.
Just a thought.

The owners of this site have MORE than proven that they’re capable of designing a logo and bringing it all together with the overall design. I would much rather leave it up to them.

Was just an idea.
I just don’t know how people can say ‘I love…’ to any of the designs shown? The blue version looks like it has ‘duplo’ (big enough for a 2 year old) buttons at the head of the site and reminds me of this web 2.0 design garbage that’s coming out everywhere. The black version looks like the default installation of mambo… which again has been done A LOT and has no individual character. And the 3rd… the 3rd… how can an opinion even be formed? There’s nothing there!
I’m not trying to come across as crass or rude, I understand that this is a non-revenue venture for these people and if they needed some of the load lifted from their shoulders what better way to do it than rally the ‘troops’ with a game of sorts.

Good luck on getting all the old downloads to the new system. Just a few months ago I transferred all 1.7k Mac GUI downloads from static HTML to a PHP-DB system, and that’s probably a quarter of what ResEx has in archives!
my vote goes to that first mock-up design. i don’t like dark sites and that last one seems to have a childish feeling to it, imo, but thats probably due to the redone resedit clown colors.
i’ve been holding off on my site, to see what you guys do. depending on the end result, i may just upload everything from my site, to resex.
Congrats on your progress and thank you for the update. A recent switcher, I’d heard of and visited resexcellence in the past, but wasn’t a member there. Since I’ve migrated to the Mac, I’ve heard loads about what the site used to be, and when I saw that the site was being resurrected, I immediately subscribed to the feed to get insta-updates. I have just a quick request: Can you please add a comments feed in addition to the existing entries feed? Reading the comments in my feed reader will leave me not quite so cross-eyed. My opinion on mockups is that I’m not really really fond of any of them that I see right now. reason: they all have quite a lot of empty space. The dark one is the best as far as layout, but I’m with cruciarius that i don’t like it’s color scheme
but at least we’ll have resex back!!! which is good.
What I would like to suggest (as I have multiple times in the past) is that most of the styling be done in CSS, and be done in such a way that users can easily create their own stylesheets to change the look of the site.
I’ve often said that as a site largely about submitting GUI mods, it would make a lot of sense if we could also submit mods for the site design/layout. Just a thought…

nothing in any of the designs have me even remotely excited especially in light of MacHeist, MaThemes 2.0, etc… Plus I didn’t realize this was a contest for voting. I’m pretty pumped about the new ResEx and I’m sure that the end result will be spectacular.

It is good to see a progress report. I would, however, recommend to not show any mockups and just do what you guys want to do. Getting others involved will only slow the process and may even discourage you by feedback provided. It is good that you may want to get the Mac community involved, but hey, you own the site now, so do with it what you will and have fun doing it!
And definitely no logo contest. It was clear from last time that actual designers will not enter a contest to design a ResEx logo for free. You’ll get the same cr*p as last time with a contest like that from people who think that with Photoshop and a couple bevels they can make a great logo.

No offense intended, but I think you should go back to the drawing board with those site mock-ups.
Just to be clear, these are design direction mockups. None of them indicate a final product in any way. They are all 3 purposely different in order to give us a general direction to take with a design.
We *have* started down the path in one of those directions. I won’t say which just yet however…
For the record, I’m liking the blue and black. But whatever direction you guys end up taking as far as the layout, I’m sure it will look great

About the Resex’s look and feel, I don’t like any of the three models, but with your knife on my throat I would choose the black model.

I very happy that someone (yeah, I’m talking to you) wrestled the reins and saved this old warhorse.
The “old content” is what I’ve been worried about, what’s left after that carriage wreck. This content for ResEdit 2.x.x, etc., is important, some of us still have a lot of old things (still working).
I’m terribly proud you all raised this great site back from the glue factory, now saddle ‘er up and smack her on the ass.

To tell you the truth I’m not in love with any of those designs, but I’m glad you’re doing something with it
it’s the content that really matters, so good work and thanks for the updates! (I very much like all of the madebysofa sites, where simplicity and readability is key).
All three of the designs seem to be OK, however, one really can’t tell when they’re so small.
But I think that was point of that, just to show that they are working on something.
I personally like the purple mockup, because it kind of keeps the original feel while still updating the logo and design. My second choice would be the blue one. Also, on what hylas said about keeping the old content, I agree, because of the nostalgia and because my dad still owns an old Quadra (OS 8.x) and a PowerMac G4 (the original one)(OS 9.2), and when he finally upgrades I want to still have some stuff that I can use those old ones for.
I don’t really care what “colors” are used for backgrounds/frames. I do have a thing for the old-skool logo though, I agree with Leslie, modernize/aquafy the old “Jack in the Mac” logo.

P.S. I also like the silver/gold resex type you already have up top. That with the darker background and a modern Jack in the Mac….that would be totally tasty!

i don’t get why people want the black version, saying “it’ll be easier on the eyes”. dark sites bother me and, i feel, are harder to use, than lighter colored sites.

As the days go by I intermittently check the remnants of resexcellence. As I type the addy, there is always anticipation that one of these days Ill hit enter and the site will bounce up in all of its cataloged pixelated glory. Im happy to see such a devotion to updating us, (your life-blood so to speak) and Ill look foreward to seeing res-excellence in a new light. The question with form and function? (white=function) (black=form) and the afro-equipped rex ex jack in the box makes me twitch a little. Keep up the good work guys.

Well, that’s a great surprise for the New Year. Resexcellence is coming back! As a past contributor and frequent visitor I’m glad to see that progress is being made in the revamping of my favorite website. I was upset to hear that the proprietors were discouraged by the impatience and downright rudeness of a vocal few. Those detractors never spoke for the whole of he Mac community, who really missed you and can’t wait for you to be up and running again. Welcome back guys, and Happy New Year.

I know it takes a while to build a site, and I know it has been xmas and new years and all that, and you might have family etc etc, but i partly agree with Tracker. This is dragging on a bit long. Need a few updates guys to keep us up to date. Otherwise you’ll end up with more Tracker-like comments. I sense a wave coming on. Keep up the work.
the blue one’s my favorite, but none of the themes shown really catches my attention. i want a theme similar to phill ryu’s blog (phillryu.com) because i think it tells you right away that this website has to do with design and that general area.
i hope you’ll get it ready sooner, rather than later, but i’m pretty sure your hard work will pay off more if done right, so i’m willing to wait.
as for my preferences as to the site mock-ups, i like the blue/orange one. it’s bright without being *too* bright. i also have a tendency toward dark sites, so that one is a close second.

yeah, resex is about the content, but i personally used the forums more than the content. i’m pretty much set with my icons, theme, boot panel, etc.

Dear sir where’s the resource on OS 9, that recognise the computer it’s on, abd the CPU it boots up. So you can Boot 8100 under OS 9.2, or iMac G4 “USB 2.0″ under OS 9.2

I think that as RE users we may as well face the facts that RE is dead. Over the years I have loved RE, it was a great site and i am sorry to see it go.
