Remove the 90 second logout delay from Multiple Users. Previously on ResExcellence, we showed you how to remove the Command-Q key combination from the Logout menu item in the Finder. Thanks to help from John Moe and Bruce Partridge, the following edit can shorten the 90 second confirmation delay! In the System's Extensions folder, there is a file called Multi-User Startup.
Make a copy of this file and open it in ResEdit. Find the INIT resource and open it with a double-click.
There is only one ID number, 600.
Open it with a double-click.
The first column of numbers represent the row that you are seeing (in HEX).
Scroll down to row 1EF0 (the underlined number). In that row, change 5A hex (90 decimal) to your new logout delay. In this example, I chose one second.
Repeat the change in row 1F10.
Change 5A hex (90 decimal) to your new logout delay. You can now close the INIT resource, but we have one more small change to make.
Realistically, if you set the delay to one second, the user is not going to have enough time to click cancel, so if you do want to provide them with that option, you should set the delay higher, to 5 seconds for example. In this situation, it would be nice if you also changed the dialog box to reflect the new time. Scroll to the STR# resources and open them with a double-click. Find ID# 15101 and open it. In items number 20 and 21, you will see the text for the two possible logout dialog boxes. Change the number to match your new delay.
You can now save your work and quit ResEdit. Replace the original extension with the modified one and restart the computer. Combined the edit to remove the command key, shortening the logout delay gives PowerUsers the responsiveness the expect from their Mac!
