Welcome!

Resexcellence used to be a daily stop on the web for me. In fact, to a degree, it’s what’s gotten me into what I do now in the first place. Without its daily, quirky news updates, and its vast archive of GUI customizations, I definitely would not have been as interested in GUI customization as I became. (Interested enough to start MacThemes.net.)

Unfortunately, over the past few years, those visits became less and less frequent, and eventually came to a stop. It was only a few months ago, when I checked out Resexcellence again for the first time in months, that I realized how close to dying it was. The site was in damage control mode, thanks in part to lack of activity, a sore need for an overhaul, and gross mismanagement by its most recent owner. This got me boiling to the point of writing a scathing entry on my blog about what’s been going on.

The blog entry got a lot of feedback, especially from former Resex fans like myself. But I quickly realized a blog post on its own wasn’t going to fix things up by itself, and over the next few weeks, I worked with my friends at Unsanity to purchase the website. We are committed to giving this site the huge refresh and injection of talent that it deserves, and over the next few months, we’ll be keeping you posted on this blog as the new Resexcellence.com comes together. You can be assured that this site is in the right hands.

Stay tuned for a post from Brian Wilson of Unsanity detailing what’s planned for the new GUI customization archive backend, plus updates on the site redesign. And let us know what you’d like to see!

And of course, we highly encourage you guys to spread the word and let fellow Resex fans know this is happening!

Hallelujah! I’m so psyched that you’re taking up the torch. I’ve so missed Resxcellence and can’t wait to see what you guys come up with. Have you thought about setting up an eNewsletter to which folks can freely subscribe and keep updated with the latest and greatest GUI stuff? That might be one way to avoid the “out of sight out of mind” problem that Resexcellence had. I was just as guilty of neglecting the site…until I need a specific GUI that I knew was posted there. There’s got to be some circular interaction between the site and its users. Best wishes to y’all in your endeavors!

Hey guys, I am very much looking forward to the return of ResExcellence. I have been a loyal visitor of this site for many years, and was very sad to see it go so far downhill. I look forward to all you will do with it, and welcome it back.

Indeed – welcome back! I’ve been checking this URL just about every day since it’s grisly demise a few months back and have been eagerly awaiting the rebirth.

I look forward to seeing how things play out, and taking a gander at what ya’ll have to offer.

It is most WONDERFUL to see things are comin along. I am one of the ‘long time’ users who was not happy with the direction the site was going with the last owners.

I have been checking just about everyday for news on the site, and i see it has paid off!

Please, keep up the hard work (but take your time to make it great!!)

All i would like to see is the site back with updates!! Its a free service you guys provide to the mac community, so whatever you guys do, im sure will be great!!

i hope the site comes back, its always great to see what cool stuff people have created

November 1st, 2006 @ 9:02 pm

Sandra, that’s a good idea, and we may definitely add that soon. But for now, I recommend adding the RSS feed to Safari (or a newsfeed reader if you have one), and you’ll be automatically notified whenever there’s something new on this blog.

Used to be a daily stop for me as well — I used to spend free time tinkering with my old Power Mac 8600 doing all sorts of mods and things to OS 8 and 9, it was a lot of fun. Resexcellence was the best resource to find anything. It wasn’t exactly the prettiest web site in the world, but it had a lot of content, and nothing was terribly hard to find.

I’m glad to hear that resexcellence is finally being resurrected after all this time, by someone who knows what they are doing. (Already, I’ve got an idea. I suggest a domain name change of some kind — on occasion the web site is blocked due to ‘sex’ being part of the name. Or perhaps it should stay the way it is. *shrugs*)

November 1st, 2006 @ 10:45 pm

I would like to join in and add my own well wishes to you guys! Like you, I was a daily visitor of this site for years. I also contributed a few graphical creations, as well. The site had a clean, usable interface, and concentrated on fun goodies rather than news, etc. Simple? sure. But that’s the point.

Then, as we all remember, several so-called “experts” took it upon themselves to change the site into some clunky, unusable wikipedia mutation. Soon afterwards, they made matters worse by taking a billion years to complete even the smallest steps of progress–punctuated by an asanine and poorly run “contest” to pick a logo. The final straw was a deliberate lack of any effort to update the site at all, accompanied by defensive whining and childish rants.

Since the time they took over, I, like you Philip, abandoned the site and moved on to places such as pixelgirl, etc… I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time and effort to bring our little beloved Mac site back to it’s former glory!

Again, good luck!

PS: I’m sure you have all the help you need, but, as a graphic designer myself, I’d be more than happy to contribute if i can!

As a member of the board macthemes,
I would like to say. Phillip Ryu I also feel what you’ve felt when the site was dying. I also wanted to help. But as student is this hard. So I find it awesome job that you (and more) are taking over to keep this site alive. It’s great, I can finally come over here and see updates (like Res. usually has).

My request is, keep it simple. And I want those new updates like res. had.

thanks and great job.

…by the way…
is it joust coincidence or is it because Unsanity folk are at the helm, that this new front page matches the latest cool Shapeshifter Theme called AmonRaa Recording Studios? I mean I’m running it as I write this and it matches perfectly. Pretty nifty either way!

November 2nd, 2006 @ 4:45 am

Kudos to a new era for ResExcellence! You boys have the right mix of talent, time and desire to make it happen, — along with the latest and greatest hardware/software to move forward in a meaningful way. As both a fan and former editor, I wish you the best.

November 2nd, 2006 @ 6:14 am

This is great news, I hope. I’m confident the site will look fantastic. But as you and others noticed the last few months of ResEx by reading through the comments, nobody really cares what it looks like… we just want easy to find content, and we want it often. This is where ResEx failed at the end.

As a contributor or Desktops and Icons on the ol’ ResExcellence site, I’m very please to see that it’s going to get a chance at rebirth and resurrection. Like many, ResExcellence had long been one of my daily “must visit” sites and one that when it declined into inactivity was quite disappointing. I know that I submitted a few things that never were posted, and I sure would like to see it get back to its former glory and even get some improvements. Custom icons and quailty desktops were readily available and links to contibutors web sites allowed the site’s visitors to explore a favorite contributors efforts off site. The old formula really worked well – I hope much of that ‘user community’ can be re-established and made to thrive again. I just never found another site that offered the quality and community that ResExcellence had be default because of the nature of the contributions and contributors.

While I never contributed screen shots, I visited those every time they were posted and learned about great little sets of utilities, screen toys, image sites and icon collections that were available elsewhere. That kind of unselfish promotion of other sites and materials also spoke volumes.

Woo Hoo, This is the first site that loads in my browser everyday. Very excited to see more than a logo on the page.

Good luck with the Takeover

It’s awesome to see all the enthusiasm about this. We’re very excited about our gameplan for the new ResEx and hope you will all be as excited as we are as we reveal more in the coming days! The new ResEx will look great AND offer great features.

Jim, we are definitely aware of that, and while a big part of this refresh will be a really nice design, the main thing will be a powerful and robust engine for the GUI archives. :)

I recently went back to this site and was surprised to see it shut down. I’m glad It’s in the right hands. I used the extentive archive of custom screen shots for ideas for my system. I spent countless hours on the site in the past, but like many for some reason I stopped going to it. But I will be looking for the new site!

I have been clicking on my ResEx bookmark everyday for the past er years and years, even when it was down, even when it was just a forum. There are days when I was looking for a specific type of icon set, or wanted a quirky new app, and rather the trudge through the minutia of MacUpdate or Interfacelift I wanted my ResEx, I cannot wait until it is back…
Is there going to be a mailing list or info for former contributors, such as myself, if we could/should upload our ‘jazz’ again?

It’s funny how so many of us would return to the old neighborhood on a daily basis to see if our old friend had come back around.

This is a site of nostalgia for many of us. We grew up here, made friends here, and we learned here. Like a school. ResEX I hope will kinda remain “old school”, we don’t need a lot of bells & whistles, we desire the content & resources and with that were happy.

Looking forward to the reunion!

Cheers

Wow! This is great news, ResEX was my favorite site for years, and like most things you don’t realize how much you use something till its gone (I’ve been checking the link for months now hoping to see something here!). I wish you goodluck, and please take your time, its better for the site to be delayed a little longer than it to die again.

November 2nd, 2006 @ 6:59 pm

Finally! I’ve checked it continuously even when it’s been out of commission. :)

Do yourself a favor and enlist a few people who can make weekly updates on different days for different areas. I have to admit I never dove into the RealBasic column, but it was good to have and I always knew there were other things to get my attention and keep me a regular visitor.

It would be great if you could get into the inner mechanics of the GUI in OS X in a similar way to how ResEx pried open OS 9 with ResEdit. Even “basic” tutorials. That aspect never seemed to materialize (at least for me). Could be the info was already considered found “elsewhere,” but shouldn’t ResEx have the best of the best?

And best of luck to restoring the site to its former glory!

For as long as there is an Apple in use, there will be a happy little user wanting to modify it.
ResExcellence is synonymous with modifying Macs.

I am glad to see my old familiar friend breathing again.
Good luck to all those working on reviving the site.

ResExcellence was one of my favorite and most visited sites on the net. I owe the members and community much thanks for all their help and knowledge. I am extreamly happy to see that this site is not dead. It was very sad that ResExcellence had to shut down, but it appears that it is comming back and by the looks of it, stronger then ever.

I do have a question, I was wondering if some of the old content is going to be saved? Or will we have to resubmit it.

No, no, no, I don’t think you understand. You STOLE ResEx. You RUINED it. You DESTROYED a great community. I have been going to ResEx since the first week it was online, you’re a shame to what used to be my favorite stop on the web I’d check twice a day.

Dissapointed
November 6th, 2006 @ 3:03 pm

WTF. I was never really in favor of the last owner of ResExcellence, but at least he kept some things up, and especially the forums were still there. But then people have to go and shoo him away and get someone else. But you guys took down everything. Even the forums, one of my most favored and most treasured mac communities. And all this “We’ll be back” crap pissed me off. Show us what you have done, give us some news for us to gauge where you are. You kept us way too much into the dark. And this being run by Unisanity actually isn’t that great. Sometime down the road is going to do something that isn’t wrong, but Unisanity isn’t going to like it, so they won’t allow it on the site. In the end, you have just lost a longtime ResEx reader.

November 6th, 2006 @ 3:09 pm

Dissapointed – Some clarification is in order…. we didn’t “take down” anything. We acquired the site in a completely dead/dormant state. So us putting anything online is more than what was there when we acquired it.

As for the Unsanity involvement, you might want to read the post after this one to clear up your confusion there. But your point does stand, the new owners might not like something… but how is that different from *any* owners? Hopefully when we open the doors, what we do with the site will speak for itself.

November 6th, 2006 @ 9:30 pm

I had not checked this site in quite awhile and it was like a sucker punch when I noticed it was gone. I hope you resurect the resexcellence!

November 7th, 2006 @ 3:12 pm

It’s good to see ResExcellence back out on the playing field! Let’s make this time be the sucessful re-launch of the mighty ResEx!!

November 7th, 2006 @ 7:18 pm

I ran the GUI mod website Aquamakeover when ResEx was still around. ResEx was the perfect community for people who wanted to customize every aspect of their OS.

While I would like to see a new design hitherto it’s been nothing but empty promises.

So please, if you’re taking over ResEx, again, do it fully, not just but up a pretty face and let it sit there while a huge archive of Desktop Pictures, mods and the whole forum rots away!

Bring back Coyle!

Careful throwing that thing around down here!!!

I’m more that happy to share. The commands are in the source code of these pages near the bottom. How they work is discoverable via Google.

Happy digging!

Material of a larger work (literary or otherwise) that is lacking in substance, attraction or worth, and therefore provides nothing to its supposed audience: The opposite of content (noun), usually generated when the author/creator is lazy, apathetic, takes their audience for granted and/or has abandoned the larger work summarily.

Used primarily to describe Web sites.

2) (Noun) (Variant)
Something expressed through some medium, as speech, writing, etc; that is empty or devoid of any substantive matter, whose only purpose is to perpetuate or justify the existence of the container/medium within which it exists.
